What happens if slopes are closed due to weather or an avalanche warning?

What happens if slopes are closed due to weather or an avalanche warning?

Safety always comes first in the mountains. Weather at altitude can be unpredictable — snow storms, high winds and heavy snowfall are all part of mountain life — and from time to time, resorts may close lifts or slopes as a precaution, for example during an avalanche warning.

Our advice: follow the resort's guidance

We always advise the same as the local resort and mountain authorities: if they've decided it's unsafe to ski, then it's unsafe to ski. Resort teams monitor conditions constantly and make these decisions with expert local knowledge, so please always follow their guidance, respect closures, and stay on open, marked pistes.

Closures are often precautionary and temporary — in many cases, parts of the mountain remain open, or lifts reopen once conditions settle. Your resort's website or app will usually show live lift and piste status, so it's worth checking regularly, as conditions in the mountains can change quickly.

Missed days on the slopes

If slopes are closed and you miss days of skiing, we recommend making a claim with your travel insurance provider. This is exactly what winter sports cover is designed for — and it's why we always recommend taking out travel insurance that includes winter sports and weather-related cover before you travel.

To support your claim, it's a good idea to keep evidence of the closure — for example, screenshots of the resort's lift status page or official announcements, along with your lift pass details.

Your ski pass

If we're able to recover any money for your ski passes because the slopes were fully closed, we will always pass that on to you. Get in touch with us after your trip and we'll be happy to look into this for you.
