Some airline systems do not recognise special characters such as hyphens. When this happens, a double-barrelled surname (e.g. Smith-Jones) may appear as SmithJones or Smith Jones on your booking or boarding pass.
This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.
Will this cause issues at the airport?
No. As long as the letters of your name match your passport (even without punctuation), you will be accepted for travel.
We have never had a customer refused travel because a hyphen was removed.
What happens with different airlines?
Ryanair – Their system usually removes the hyphen automatically, if you would like you can add the hyphen directly with Ryanair by accessing your Ryanair booking and completing a "name change."
EasyJet – If you would like the hyphen included, email us at customer@heidi.com and we can add it for you.
British Airways – BA booking systems accept full surnames, but hyphens may still be removed on the boarding pass. This is fine.
Wizz Air – Hyphens are often removed; this is standard and does not affect travel.
Most other airlines – Special characters are usually stripped out automatically. This is common across airline systems.
What do you need to do?
Enter your name as accurately as possible when booking.
If the hyphen is removed, you should not have an issue when boarding.
If you want it corrected or specifically shown, contact us by sending an email to customers@heidi.com and we’ll update it where possible.
