Important Travel Update: EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
From October 12, 2025, the EU is introducing a new Entry/Exit System (EES). This will affect all UK travellers visiting the Schengen Area, including the following countries: Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
What This Means for You:
First trip after Oct 12, 2025: You’ll need to register your passport details and biometric data (fingerprints + photo) at a kiosk at the border or before departure at certain UK ports.
Future trips: Your data will already be stored (for 3 years). You’ll just need a quick check — usually a facial scan.
Where it applies: Almost all EU/Schengen countries.
In the UK: Checks will also take place before departure if you travel via London St Pancras (Eurostar).
Questions at the border: You may be asked about your accommodation, travel plans, and funds. A return ticket helps but is not legally required.
What You Should Do:
Allow extra time: The first journey may take longer due to registration.
Bring documents: Keep proof of accommodation, funds, and onward travel accessible. Your Heidi Booking Confirmation is acceptable and can be found on your MyBooking Portal under the Documents section.
Don’t worry about stamps: Your passport won’t need stamping anymore.
Who Is Exempt:
Children under 12 don’t need fingerprints.
Some residents, family members of EU nationals, and certain visa holders are exempt.
Looking Ahead:
From late 2026, the EU will also introduce Etias, a visa waiver system (£17, valid for 3 years). This is separate from the EES.
